The Department of History of Art, Architecture and Landscape is seeking a temporary Lecturer in Landscape History to join the Chair Group of Landscape History. We are looking for an enthusiastic and committed educator with broad expertise in landscape history, particularly in the study of designed landscapes, gardens, and parks.

What are you going to do?
The candidate will teach mainly in the BA program, supervise BA theses, and participate in relevant administrative tasks.
Who are you?
The candidate has:
- A PhD in landscape history or a related field, or you will defend your PhD within the next few months. Candidates with substantial and demonstrable scientific knowledge and experience in the field of landscape history relevant to the position will also be considered.
- Record of high-quality teaching appropriate to career stage
- Good writing and speaking skills in English and also in Dutch ability to work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and intercultural academic environment
- Experience with administrative duties and/or departmental service and/or professional service is welcome
- Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of landscape history, with particular expertise in designed landscapes, including gardens, parks, and related theories and concepts.
- Knows the professional vocabulary of landscape history (in English) and is familiar with the various ways in which designed landscapes are represented, interpreted, and studied. This includes knowledge of relevant theories, research methods, and source materials such as maps, design drawings, archival records, and other historical and visual sources.
- Has experience in teaching and supporting student learning in an academic setting.
- Can work independently and collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and intercultural academic environment.
What can you expect from us?
- In accordance with the collective labor agreement for Dutch universities, we offer a salary of at least € 3.706 up to a maximum of € 5.760 (schaal 10) gross per month for a full-time employment contract.
- 232 vacation hours per year, based on a 38-hour workweek (1.0 FTE). You can also work more or fewer hours in exchange for more or fewer free hours. For example, with a 40-hour workweek, you save 96 extra free hours, and with a 36-hour workweek, you lose 96 hours.
- End-of-year bonus of 8.3% and 8% holiday allowance.

- A temporary contract for a period of 12 months.

The Department of History of Art, Architecture & Landscape (AAL) in Groningen is unique because, in the Bachelor program, it combines the study of the visual arts, urbanism, architectural history and the history of landscapes, and examines the relationships between artwork, city and landscape.
Typical for the courses of the landscape section is the interaction between designed landscapes, country estates (gardens, parks, land art: phenomena closely linked to urban planning) and the geological and archaeological features of landscapes, and the way it integrates the representation of landscapes in artworks (notably paintings – here it connects to art history). Specifically, the architectural and urban history section positions classical, object-based history and theory as the basis for addressing contemporary issues, notably in cultural heritage. Characteristic of the approach of the art history section is that it transcends the traditional lines of division between different periods and, while acknowledging the efficacy of chronological series in teaching, stresses the common features of works of art as material objects (with a special focus on their educational properties).
The MA Landscape History (in Dutch) at the University of Groningen focuses on the past, present and future of cultural landscapes within their broader environmental, socio-economic and cultural contexts. This master shows a strong interdisciplinary approach combining historical maps and written sources with earth scientific, environmental and toponymical data, field observations as well as local knowledge gained by interviews. The courses include both Dutch and European landscapes and not only focus on historical topics, but also on the application of landscape knowledge in nature and landscape management, rural planning, heritage management as well as climate change policies.
