The NOVA Sub-mm Group at the University of Groningen is looking for a project manager research to advance the group’s research and development of sub-millimeter receiver technology for astronomy.
You will be responsible for advancing the research, development and optimization of cryogenic receivers and their detectors. With a compact team of instrument scientists you will enable future groundbreaking astronomical research through the development of new high-sensitivity heterodyne technologies and state-of-the-art instrumentation.

What are you going to do?
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Conduct and manage research and development projects in sub-mm technology by developing, testing, and optimizing cryogenic receivers and their detectors.
- Performing and guiding laboratory experiments.
- Develop, control, and maintain a detailed project schedule and manage the associated resources, budget and risk register.
- Coordinating with project partners and suppliers.
- Organize regular project meetings and coordinate with the system-level project management.
- Provide regular progress reports to the NOVA management and our Instrument Steering Committee.
- Writing and contributing to technical documentation for instrumentation projects.
- Presenting findings at scientific conferences and publishing in academic journals.
- Occasionally contributing to instrumentation production projects.
Who are you?
We are looking for a project manager research in sub-mm instrumentation. To match our vacancy you:
- Hold a PhD in applied/experimental physics or a related field.
- Have extensive experience in research of heterodyne instrumentation and/or related detection technologies.
- Have strong technical and managerial communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Have a drive to create high-end astronomical instrumentation and the ability to conduct interdisciplinary research.
In addition, you meet as many as possible of the following qualifications:
- Holds knowledge of superconducting device physics and sub-mm detector technology including parametric amplifier technology.
- Is familiar with low-noise electronics (GHz range), cryogenic, and vacuum technology.
- Has experience in data analysis for instrumentation testing.
- Has an extensive background in writing funding proposals for scientific research.
What can you expect from us?
- In accordance with the collective labor agreement for Dutch universities, we offer a salary of at least € 5.932 up to a maximum of € 7.573 (salary scale 12) gross per month for a full-time employment contract.
- 232 vacation hours per year, based on a 38-hour workweek (1.0 FTE). You can also work more or fewer hours in exchange for more or fewer free hours. For example, with a 40-hour workweek, you save 96 extra free hours, and with a 36-hour workweek, you lose 96 hours.
- End-of-year bonus of 8.3% and 8% holiday allowance.

- A contract of 1.0 FTE for a period of one year.

The Netherlands Research School for Astronomy (NOVA) is the alliance between the astronomy departments of the universities of Groningen, Amsterdam, Leiden and Nijmegen. NOVA conducts astronomical research at the highest international level and develops state-of-the-art astronomical instrumentation in the sub-mm and optical-infrared domains. In its quest to answer some of the most fundamental questions about the universe, NOVA collaborates extensively with research institutes within the Netherlands (SRON and ASTRON) and abroad.
The Sub-mm Instrumentation Group of NOVA at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute of the University of Groningen consists of about 8 highly skilled professionals that develop cutting-edge astronomical instrumentation in the far infrared and sub-millimeter range. The group has extensive experience in the development and construction of cryogenic and room-temperature instruments for major sub-mm observatories such as the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA, www.almaobservatory.org/), the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) and the Event Horizon Telescope (eventhorizontelescope.org/). The group primarily focuses on the development of high-sensitivity heterodyne technologies using superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) tunnel junctions as mixers for high resolution spectroscopy, although other promising (heterodyne or direct) detector techniques in the broad frequency range around 1 THz, or supporting technologies, may be explored as well. The work takes place in international project consortia and technologically there are extensive connections with SRON, The Netherlands Institute for Space Research, with which the group is co-located.
