The research project: From workarounds to shared routines
The NWO-funded project From Workarounds to Shared Routines: The Cost of Accessibility Across Dutch Work and Income Pathways investigates how responsibility for making work accessible is distributed among disabled workers, employers, colleagues, support professionals and public institutions.
The project focuses particularly on transitions into, within and out of work. It compares different Dutch employment settings and examines when accessibility depends on individual workarounds and informal support, and when it is embedded in shared and sustainable organisational routines.
Through qualitative and participatory research, the project brings together the experiences of people with disabilities and chronic health conditions with the perspectives of employers, professionals and policymakers. Findings will be translated with project partners into practical tools, protocols and learning materials.
Your role
Within the research design and methodological framework established by the project leads, you will take day-to-day responsibility for substantial components of the empirical research. You will organise and conduct fieldwork, maintain structured and comparable case documentation, analyse qualitative material and prepare case-level and cross-case analytical contributions. You will coordinate activities with participating organisations, experts-by-experience and other project partners. The project leads retain responsibility for methodological design, comparative synthesis and overall scientific direction.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Carrying out substantial components of multi-method qualitative research within the agreed research design, including interviews, observations, focus groups, workplace shadowing and participatory workshops.
- Recruiting participants and coordinating fieldwork, consent procedures, schedules and communication with participating organisations.
- Working collaboratively and respectfully with people with different disabilities, communication preferences and access requirements, including experts-by-experience and co-researchers.
- Analysing interview, observational, organisational and policy material and contributing to case studies and comparative analysis across the project settings.
- Maintaining secure, accurate and well-organised research data, fieldwork documentation and consent records.
- Organising and contributing to co-analysis sessions, stakeholder meetings, pilot activities and the development of accessible tools and research outputs.
- Contributing to project planning and reporting, academic and professional publications, public engagement and the coordination of clearly defined tasks undertaken by student assistants.
Teaching
The teaching responsibilities will primarily include:
- Contributing to the course Qualitative Data Collection and Analysis, including teaching, feedback and assessment.
- Supervising interdisciplinary bachelor-level student projects.
If you recognize yourself in this role but do not yet meet all the requirements completely, do not let that hold you back from applying. We are happy to discuss your experience and explore opportunities for growth within the role together.
What can you expect from us?
