What are you going to do?
As a Research Technician in Mass Spectrometry at the University of Groningen, you will:
- Develop, implement, and validate new sample preparation methods for single-cell (glyco)proteomics, phosphoproteomics, deep visual (glyco)proteomics, and mass spectrometry imaging (MSI).
- Perform LC-MS and MSI analyses, including data acquisition, analysis, and reporting of results.
- Support research projects of Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, and postdoctoral researchers, providing technical guidance and training in MS-based analysis.
- Contribute to teaching activities in the Pharmacy and/or Medical Pharmaceutical Sciences (MPS) curriculum, providing support in various courses and/or practicals as needed.
- Maintain and troubleshoot LC-MS(/MS) and MSI instruments, as well as sample preparation equipment (e.g., liquid handling robotics, FACS, laser microdissection systems).
- Assist in the general organization and upkeep of the AB and IMSC laboratory infrastructures.
Who are you?
We are looking for a candidate with:
- A Master’s degree in Analytical Chemistry or a closely related field, or alternatively a Bachelor’s degree in the same field and extensive experience in a similar role as a Research Technician.
- Demonstrated experience in the operation, maintenance, and method development of LC-MS and/or MSI systems.
- Proficiency in English (oral and written).
- An independent, solution-oriented, and proactive working attitude.
- Strong affinity for instrumental techniques and data analysis software.
- The ability to thrive in an interdisciplinary, academic, and international research environment.
What can you expect from us?
- In accordance with the collective labor agreement for Dutch universities, we offer a salary of at least € 3.382 up to a maximum of € 4.484 (Schaal 08) gross per month for a full-time employment contract.
- 232 vacation hours per year, based on a 38-hour workweek (1.0 FTE). You can also work more or fewer hours in exchange for more or fewer free hours. For example, with a 40-hour workweek, you save 96 extra free hours, and with a 36-hour workweek, you lose 96 hours.
- End-of-year bonus of 8.3% and 8% holiday allowance.

You will work in the Analytical Biochemistry (AB) group, part of the Groningen Research Institute of Pharmacy (GRIP). The AB group is a dynamic, multidisciplinary team specializing in mass spectrometry, proteomics, metabolomics, glycomics, and mass spectrometry imaging (MSI). The group is housed in the ERIBA building at the UMCG campus and collaborates closely with the Interfaculty Mass Spectrometry Center (IMSC).
The AB and IMSC laboratories feature state-of-the-art infrastructure, including over 15 high-end mass spectrometers, dedicated sample preparation setups and IT infrastructure. You will contribute to interdisciplinary research projects, from fundamental studies to clinically oriented multi-omics research and biomarker discovery.
