Academiegebouw van de RuG in Groningen

What are you going to do?

Inspired by the Dutch Young Academy (De Jonge Akademie), and operating independently within the University of Groningen, the Young Academy Groningen (YAG) aims to:

  • stimulate dialogue and collaboration between disciplines, within and outside of the University of Groningen;
  • give a voice to early-career researchers at the University of Groningen to influence policy both at local and national levels;
  • promote investment in the professional development of early career researchers at the University of Groningen;
  • explore new approaches for connecting academia and society, with particular focus on the Northern Netherlands.

Members of the YAG will be able to realise their ideas together with like-minded young researchers from all Faculties, forge interdisciplinary ties, and set up joint projects. They will be able to contribute to science policy and put their ideas for outreach activities into practice.

Active YAG membership comes with a budget for supporting personal activities and the opportunity to use YAG funds for (co)organizing projects and events. Finally, once a year, members can submit a proposal for one of the interdisciplinary PhD positions currently allocated to the YAG annually.

Who are you?

  • The applicant has received their PhD degree less than 10 years before applying for YAG membership (measured from the deadline of the call, December 15th, 2025). This period may be extended up to a maximum of 2 years in case of pregnancy (12 months per child), illness or childcare (formal reduction in working hours), or training in a clinical specialism (total aggregated time spent on training);
  • the applicant exhibits academic excellence, which includes research accomplishments, qualifications in the areas of leadership, team science, societal impact, and/or teaching;
  • the applicant is an ambassador for the University and for science;
  • the applicant has a proven track record in at least one of the following areas: science policy, societal impact, outreach and communications, diversity and internationalisation, interdisciplinarity.

What can you expect from us?

  • 232 vacation hours per year, based on a 38-hour workweek (1.0 FTE). You can also work more or fewer hours in exchange for more or fewer free hours. For example, with a 40-hour workweek, you save 96 extra free hours, and with a 36-hour workweek, you lose 96 hours.
  • End-of-year bonus of 8.3% and 8% holiday allowance.
  • Extensive opportunities for personal and professional development.
  • Contract duration: In selecting new members, the Young Academy Groningen will seek a fair representation of our university’s academics in terms of faculties, disciplines, gender, and Dutch and international staff. Members are elected for five years (non-renewable).
