We are looking for a candidate who has a proven track record in high-quality, internationally recognized research and research leadership. The candidate should also excel in high-quality teaching including innovative teaching leadership. We are looking for an academic with proven administrative leadership within the Faculty of Arts.

In June 2026, Dr. Joop Koopmans, UHD Early Modern History, retires. In accordance with the SPP 2026 for Cluster 4, Dr. Koopmans’ departure creates a vacancy for the position of UHD in the chair group Early Modern History.

Below is the desired profile for a new UHD in the chair group. In this we follow the Faculty’s promotion policy (memo L25.00124).

The Faculty’s promotion policy offers four profiles for promotion to UHD. Of those, we focus on the profile “Research Emphasizing Leadership”, but we also expect the candidate to successfully respond to the criteria of the other three profiles. Alignment with the respective UFO profile is a basic requirement.

What are you going to do?

60% teaching, 40% research.

Who are you?

We are looking for a candidate who has a proven track record in high-quality, internationally recognized research and research leadership. The candidate should also excel in high-quality teaching including innovative teaching leadership. We are looking for an academic with proven administrative leadership within the Faculty of Arts.

More specifically, we are looking for a candidate with an innovative, original and future-orientated research line which is internationally recognized, and which responds to interdisciplinary research questions with important societal relevance. The candidate should have a proven track record in making their research accessible to and impactful for broader audiences (inside and outside academia). Sharing good practice and supporting other researchers in the Faculty or more broadly both within and outside UG in grant applications is a strength of the candidate. Research leadership should include the successful conduct of externally funded research projects as well as PhD supervision appropriate for the UFO profile of the position.

In the domain of teaching we are looking for a candidate with a proven track record in teaching courses in Early Modern History including Dutch Early Modern Cultural and Political History (and who is able to teach through Dutch and English). The candidate should have a track record in leadership of large courses, a creative and pragmatic approach to the new challenges of the History curriculum and the ability to stimulate colleagues to embrace changes both in the organization of the teaching and learning community and vis-à-vis new tools such as the use of AI.

The candidate is an effective academic administrator beyond the level of the History curriculum as evidenced through the membership of administrative boards in service of the cluster and beyond.

 

What can you expect from us?

  • In accordance with the collective labor agreement for Dutch universities, we offer a salary of at least € 6.512 up to a maximum of € 7.904 (schaal 13) gross per month for a full-time employment contract.
  • 232 vacation hours per year, based on a 38-hour workweek (1.0 FTE). You can also work more or fewer hours in exchange for more or fewer free hours. For example, with a 40-hour workweek, you save 96 extra free hours, and with a 36-hour workweek, you lose 96 hours.
  • End-of-year bonus of 8.3% and 8% holiday allowance.
